Chapter Fourteen
Trouble moved out of Jackâs arms and reluctantly dug out her phone. âI have to call this in. Red, I think, needs to be interrogated andââ
âI can do that,â Jack said, coming up and taking her phone. He was cautious. Probably because sheâd been so upset with him, but he was still the same Jack, still there next to her, a safe, strong presence. âI can give Gray a call, have him here in minutes, if you want.â
âIâm not sure what I want. Red isâ¦well, heâs a little out of his mind, if you know what I mean?â
Jack gave her a lopsided grin. âI kinda got that sense when I met with him.â
âWell, we need to know what he was up to with Balrick, all of it,â she added. âThis is serious, Jack.â
âCircerran, I figured that out after the first video. I didnât get all the facts straight since he was too busy pitching the whole crazy immortal thing at me.â He grimaced and ran a hand through his hair and gave her a comical snort. âTo be perfectly honest, I wasnât buying it.â
Sheâd bet he wasnât. Jack was the here and now kind of guy. Immortals would be hard to swallow. Thinking of it, she smiled. It would have been funny to listen to, Red talking to Jack, Jack staring at him like heâd grown two heads. âWhat made you believe?â
He tugged the ends of her hair. âYou. Grayson, maybe. But you.â
For some reason the way he said that, or just that he had said it, was flattering. Jack raised an eyebrow and smiled. She melted. How can I let him go?
âIf weâre to believe that crazy guy,â Jack said, gesturing over his shoulder, she assumed to where Balrick had stood, âthen Red was working for him. But if what Red told me was trueââ
âThen Red was working for a Death Stalker cellâ¦or he was working for Balrick, and we just assumed it was all under the DS because he called it The Brotherhood.â She nibbled on her thumb and circled the living room, glancing out of the windows to see it was still dark. Hunterâs home was nice, but it wasnât hers. Can we stay here? It felt like forever since sheâd dropped down off that roof and fell into this situation.
âItâs a mess, but if we get him awake,â Jack suggested, âmaybe we can get some clarity.â
She faced him and leaned against the counter. He was crouched next to Red, maybe to see if heâd woken up.
Something dangerous outside the house suddenly rose up and snapped at her. She spun to face the direction where the sensations were the worst
âJack!â A second later, a vibration rumbled through the air. She tracked the source and landed on Red. He was still spelled, but he was the central point of danger. âJack, move away from him!â
âWhat is it?â Jack pulled his gun and walked over to the living room window, pushing the curtain aside with the barrel. She
